Pongal conjures up the excitement of making Pongal at home, waiting for the pot to boil over so that we can shout Pongal O Pongal. The festivity is contagious to say the least. And of course for some of us who’ve witnessed Jallikattu it’s a nervous excitement where every moment is uncertain. All of us have happy childhood memories of Pongal at home and of course Maatu Pongal at our farms. It’s a happy and festive time where we celebrate mother nature and thank her for the harvest that gives us sustenance. Our Tamil culture has ingrained into us gratitude in every festival in a very subtle way and I for one am proud of it.
For us in Tamilnadu, Pongal is closer to our hearts than Deepavali. So why not send sweets for Pongal to our near and dear ones? I wanted to pick a sweet that’s very Tamil. The perfect choice was the Thoothukudi kadalai mittai ( Tuticorin peanut candy). Made with caramelized peanuts and ghee, it’s decadent to say the least. Trust me you can’t stop with one. The one place that makes it just the right way is Ganesh Bakery in Thoothukudi. It’s a bit of an effort to get them to make it and send it all the way to Coimbatore, but well worth the effort.
The other choices were the Srivilliputtur Paalgova and the Tirunelveli Irrutu Kadai Alva. But the peanut candy stays fresh for longer and easy to pack and send for out of town family and friends.
For the packaging again I thought that it should resonate with Pongal. Also, I wanted something eco-friendly. Bio-degradable and recyclable cardboard boxes were a good pick with printed Pichwai cows on the lid. I immediately called up my dear friend Aparna Venkatesh Co-founder of Aara Design to help me with the packaging. The boxes and the tags turned out exactly the way that I envisioned. It’s always a joy to work with her.
For this Pongal celebrate with local sweets that you’ve grown up with during your childhood days. An added benefit is that they are likely to be a healthier option especially if they’re made with karupatti ( Palm jaggery). When you have extra sweets you can put them in a lovely jar or a platter adding a festive element in a corner of your home. We all need positive vibes at the moment. Trust me it feels good to support local businesses during these tough times. Try it for this festive season.
